Established in 1926 by Gotllieb Stoll and Albert Fezer under the name Fezer & Stoll, the company initially concentrating on repairing wood processing machines by making modifications to them; converting from plain bearings to ball bearings.

Their knowledge of wood processing machines lead to them concentrating on tools for carpentry initially until in 1927 when they introduced the world’s first portable chainsaw to carry out heavy workloads which had previously been done by hand.

The 1930’s saw the development of more wood working tools with the introduction of a portable circular saw, a chain mortiser for routing slots and drilling holes.  In 1933, the company changed its name to Festo, and under the guidance of Berta Stoll, wife of Gottlieb, began to focus her attention on the lives and welfare of all employees –even organizing events including a children’s Christmas party.

As the company expanded and opened new manufacturing plants in Germany and the Czech Republic, Festo created a new brand called Tool Technic in 1992 to concentrate on its power tool range and to distance itself from sister company Festo Pneumatic.

The turn of the century saw the name of the company change again to what it is known for today: Festool.

Today, the company is still run by members of the Stoll family, and still maintains a focus on employee welfare.
